Having been trained at the prestigious Central Saint Martin’s College in London, Melanie began her career as a knitwear designer for international fashion brands, before turning her expertise to furniture. She launched her own business selling bespoke luxury knitted home accessories online and her work is also sold at outlets worldwide, including Lane Crawford in Hong Kong and Wolf & Badger in London. Her first book, Hand Knit Your Home will be published in March 2013.
Melanie talked about the route she took into the industry, the experiences she had working abroad, her first pop up shop in Covent Garden and the importance of getting good press and magazine coverage in order to further raise your profile. She said: “You never know what’s going to result from anything you do. I always take the opportunity for publicity, as long as I’m not compromising myself, because this often leads to other things.”
She also gave the students great tips on how to get started in their careers once they leave university, as well as the opportunity to ask her questions at the end.
