Learning Global Conference 2011

Learning Global, The University of Northampton Learning and Teaching Conference 2011, took place on 11 May 2011 at Sunley Management Centre, Park Campus.

We are delighted to report an extremely successful conference which was attended by over 100 delegates, both internal and external, some having travelled from as far afield as Russia, the USA, China, Hong Kong and Australia.

Better understanding of the implications of global learning is an important element in the contemporary scholarship of Learning and Teaching. Our Learning Global conference was designed to provide a forum in which effective, evidence-informed practice would be shared and debated. 

The Learning Global conference was organised around four themes:

• Global Learning issues of employability and assessment
• Technology enhanced global learning
• Learning global as a transnational opportunity
• Researching the international student experience and global citizenship

The two keynote speakers were:

• Dr Janette Ryan, Higher Education Academy
• Dr Terri Kim, Brunel University

Janette spoke  on 'International education and global learning: A one-way exercise or an endeavour in mutual understanding?'

Terri spoke on 'Interface between widening participation and internationalisation in UK higher education - a clash or concord between two cultures?'

Strategic Implications of Internationalisation of Higher Education

On Tuesday 10 May, from 1-5pm, there was an event showcasing the findings from the Higher Education Academy's three year National Teaching Fellow project, led by Dr David Burnapp, Senior Lecturer, The University of Northampton.

A three-year Higher Education Academy NTF project is coming to its conclusion.  The project has compiled case-studies presenting the dilemmas and decisions of different forms of international collaborations. These case studies have enabled the design of an interactive online tool. This tool allows institutions to enter details of an intended collaboration and so generate a customised analysis. This analysis is based on previous experiences within the sector, and therefore better informs the design of new schemes and so reduces risks and maximises benefits for all stakeholders concerned. This event is intended to share the project outcomes with the sector.

A special edition of our open access online academic journal: Enhancing the Learner Experience in Higher Education will be published on 31 May 2011, focussing on articles considering the enhancement of international students' learning.
