East Midlands Centre for Non-destructive Testing

The East Midlands Centre for Non-destructive Testing (EMCNDT) is a demonstration and research facility that combines the academic expertise of The University of Northampton with the national non-destructive testing business community.  Some of its activities take place in collaboration with the School of Science and Technology's Advanced Technologies Research Group (ATRG) and its NVision facility.

The University aims to support the development and growth of the region's business community, especially engineering, motor sport and aerospace. The Centre offers research expertise, qualifications, training programmes and knowledge transfer opportunities.

Research areas include:

  • Non-destructive testing
  • Vibration and condition monitoring
  • Materials and composite development

Education and training

Academic programmes including a Foundation Degree and top-up BSc in Non-destructive Testing, Foundation Degree in Motorsport and BSc in Engineering are available at the University in collaboration with the British Institute of Non-destructive Testing (BINDT).

The Centre offers accredited training in areas such as:

  • Radiography
  • Vibration Analysis
  • Thermography
  • Tribology
  • Magnetic Flux Leakage
  • Optical and Acoustic Emission

The Centre also plans to develop a Non-Destructive Testing virtual training system for trainees and practitioners in the field.

Knowledge transfer

The Centre provides access to a pool of highly experienced and qualified staff drawn from the University and BINDT. Staff can provide advice and undertake assignments across a wide spectrum of industrial sectors and applications.
