Title of project: 'Mind the Gap'. Transitional experiences and challenges between KS4 and Post 16 SEN provision in a Northampton Comprehensive. A  Case Study.

Project abstract (max 250 words):

A number of articles and presentations have been written on SEN provision at different Key Stages (1-5). Specific experiences and challenges, peculiar to the different key stages have been covered in numerous publications.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the experiences and challenges during the transitional phase from KS4 to Post 16, in so far as SEN provision is concerned.

In order to fully appreciate some of the experiences and challenges during this transitional period, it is of utmost importance that some research on the experiences  of SEN students, parents,  teachers and support staff is also looked at in some detail.

Qualitative research, in the form of a case study will be used as it allows for the use of various methods to interpret, understand, explain and bring meaning to the research, Asenault and Anderson, (1998). The use of different means to gather and review information related to the study also potentially makes this form of research more pragmatic. The method also gives scope for the researcher to interpret the subject of study from two perspectives, the participant's (etic) point of view as well as the researcher's (emic) own perspective. Creswell, (2000).
