Continuing professional development

Career aspirations - planning your own development

There are many development opportunities available for all staff who support the student learning experience. These range from informal support from colleagues, mentoring on the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education, the University's Learning and Teaching CPD programme, to internal awards, national fellowships and external programmes. These opportunities are growing to support you in a career path in learning and teaching.

A UK Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Learning in Higher Education has been developed for institutions to apply to their professional development activities and programmes in order to demonstrate that professional standards for teaching and supporting learning are being met. The framework is a descriptor-based approach whereby HEIs determine their own criteria. The implementation of this framework is in process.

The Higher Education Academy have developed a new Professional Recognition Scheme which is designed to support the implementation of the UK Professional Standards Framework.

For support and advice on any aspect of Continuing Professional Development (Learning and Teaching), please contact the Department for Enhanced Learning, Teaching, Achievement and Employability by emailing deltaebookings@northampton.ac.uk

Continuing Professional Development programme

Sessions are open to all staff at The University of Northampton and our partner colleges, and a selection are open to M1/M69 Institutions. Workshops and seminars are designed to provide a forum for critical debate and discussion of pedagogical issues and academic practice. The programme has been specifically developed as a result of feedback from and consultation with staff who support the student learning experience.  The topics of the sessions have been identified as supporting staff's own, or their colleagues' professional development.

View CPD programme events

Please email deltaebookings@northampton.ac.uk if you, or your field/subject/course team have identified a topic that you consider could be usefully addressed through a workshop.

An important part of the CPD programme is the annual Learning and Teaching Conference.

Other staff development opportunities

We are part of the overall staff development framework of The University.  Details of this framework together with provision on areas such as leadership, management, performance and development, mentoring, technical, health and safety issues, etc. are available from the HR Staff Development area.
