Disability
The University of Northampton is committed to providing disabled students with equal opportunities and access to all aspects of university life.
Admissions
The University considers all applications on academic grounds. Disabled applicants may then be contacted to discuss their disability related needs. For more information please see the Admissions procedure for students with disabilities.
Access and facilities
The University of Northampton is generally very accessible, with wheelchair access to most buildings, and other facilities available throughout the University.
Accessibility provision includes:
-
Automatic doors to some buildings and lift access to all teaching areas
-
Accessible parking
-
Accessible bus service between Park and Avenue Campus and the town centre
-
Induction loop systems in reception areas and several lecture theatres, portable systems also available
-
Guide dog relief pens at both campuses on request
-
Mobility orientation for visually impaired students, available through student services
-
Accessible accommodation which can be adapted to meet most individual needs
-
Emergency evacuation arrangements in place for students who may have difficulty hearing alarms or evacuating buildings
-
Vibrating fire alarm pagers available
There are areas, however, that could present difficulties for some students. Avenue Campus, for example, is on a steeply sloping site and has some older buildings. Prospective students are welcome to visit the University to assess the facilities.
Academic work and study support
The University's Access Ability team can arrange for students to have assistance with note-taking and other disability related support. They can also arrange specialist study skills support for students with specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia.
Exams and assessments
Students whose disability affects their exam performance may be eligible for adjustments in exams. These need to be arranged with the Access Ability team by the end of the autumn term for all exams.
Students can also contact their course tutor in advance to request extra time and other arrangements in class tests and assignments.
