External examiners

Guidance for current external examiners.

Appointment

External examiners are appointed for a period of four years. Once the nomination has been approved, examiners receive a a letter of appointment together with full specifications of the modules to be covered and the most recent version of the External Examiner Handbook. Appointed examiners are asked to confirm their acceptance of the role within one month.

Induction

All newly appointed external examiners are invited to attend an induction day which provides an opportunity to meet with academic staff from the subject areas, learn more about the University's policies and procedures and network with other examiners.

The next induction day will take place in February 2013.

Deadlines

Unless negotiated with the Course/Field leader and confirmed with Quality and Academic Partnerships, the deadlines for submission of External Examiner Annual Reports are as follows:

  • For undergraduate/pre-registration nursing courses: 31 July of each academic year
  • For postgraduate/post-registration nursing courses: 31 October of each academic year

Fee and expenses claim forms

The annual fee for external examining may only be claimed following the submission of an annual report. Claims for expenses may be made at any time during the year.

Claims for fees and expenses must be made on the fees and expenses claim form (Word 125KB).
