External examiners
Guidance for current external examiners.
Appointment
External examiners are appointed for a period of four years. Once the nomination has been approved, examiners receive a a letter of appointment together with full specifications of the modules to be covered and the most recent version of the External Examiner Handbook. Appointed examiners are asked to confirm their acceptance of the role within one month.
Induction
All newly appointed external examiners are invited to attend an induction day which provides an opportunity for examiners to meet with academic staff from the subject areas, learn more about the University's policies and procedures and network with other examiners.
The next induction day will take place in February 2012.

Unless negotiated with the Course/Field leader and confirmed with Quality and Curriculum Services, the deadline for External Examiner Annual Reports are as follows:
- For undergraduate/pre-registration nursing courses: 31 July of each academic year
- For postgraduate/post-registration nursing courses: 31 October of each academic year
Fee and expenses claim forms
An external examiner's fee may only be claimed following the receipt of an annual report. Claims for expenses may be made following each visit to the University (or the partner college).
Claims for fees and expenses must be made on the fees and expenses claim form (Word 125KB).
