Tuition Fee Loan for 'Home' and EU students
The information below may be relevant to students commencing study in 2012/13 only. If you started study in 2011/12 or earlier and would like further information on the Tuition Fee Loan, please see Student Finance England or contact the Financial Guidance team.
The Tuition Fee Loan is a loan for new 'Home' and EU full-time and part-time undergraduate and PGCE students to cover the cost of their tuition fees so that they do not have to pay these upfront (eligibility criteria applies).
A Tuition Fee Loan is not means-tested so eligible students will be able to borrow the full amount of tuition fees charged .
The Tuition Fee Loan allows students to defer payment of their fees until after April 2016 (for most full-time students, this will be after they have completed their course) and are earning over £21,000 per year. If a student decides to take out a Tuition Fee Loan, the Student Loans Company will pay the student's tuition fees on their behalf directly to the University.
There is no age limit for a Tuition Fee Loan.
'Home' students can make an application for the loan through Student Finance England. EU students will need to make their application through the Student Finance Services European Team website.
Students will need to apply to be reassessed for financial support for their second and third years of their course. They will not automatically receive the Tuition Fee Loan for each year without reapplying.
Part-time students
From 2012 new part-time students can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan of up to £6,750. To be eligible, a student must fulfil the eligibility criteria (including residency status and previous study rules - see below) and be studying at least 25% of an equivalent full-time course.
Previous Study
If students have already studied a higher education course, even if this course was not completed (whether in the UK or overseas), they may not be eligible to receive the Tuition Fee Loan for some or all of their course duration and are advised to check their eligibility for financial support with Student Finance England or Student Finance Services European Team.
In addition, prospective students who already hold a qualification and are enrolling on a course which is an equivalent or lower qualification may not be eligible to receive a Tuition Fee Loan or other funding from Student Finance England. For further information, please contact Student Finance England or Student Finance Services European Team and The University of Northampton Tuition Fee Advisors.
