Disability Mentoring Scheme
People with a disability are as talented and as capable as anyone else but are under-represented in the workplace. We want to work together to change that and encourage students to make the most of their abilities
What's it all about?
This is a new national scheme. Students are linked with executives and professionals to gain support and experience. The scheme lasts for approximately 6 months.
Who's eligible to take part?
The scheme is open to all undergraduate students with a disability or dyslexia who are in their first or second year of academic study. Third year students are welcome, but bear in mind your final year is a busy one, so think carefully.
What happens?
You'll be linked with a mentor working in an organisation from a range of occupational sectors i.e. Revenue & Customs, The Law, The Fire Service, etc.
You'll have a number of meetings with your mentor at their place of work at which you'll review your goals and objectives; look at career pathways; improve your personal and professional skills and build up networks for when you leave university.
Comments from past participants
My mentor provided me with useful insights to working life, guidance on interviews, CV reparation, and general career advice from someone with inside knowledge and experience.
Someone to share my plans and ambitions with, who didn't have preset agendas or expectations.
In just two months, this scheme has completely changed my outlook. My mentor is helping me to overcome my fears and I am now actually looking forward to my forthcoming job interviews.
I developed my self-confidence and learnt strategies to develop areas of weakness that I now view as strengths.
This scheme is currently not running during the academic year 2010- 2011 but may run again during the academic year 2011- 2012 and details will be available nearer to the time.
