Widening participation
The University of Northampton is committed to attracting students from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and enabling them to make a success of the academic and pastoral opportunities university life offers.
The University offers support at all stages of the application process and throughout the student's time at the University, as well as assistance at the end of courses with moving into employment or further study.
Examples of support for Widening Participation (WP) students include:
- Outreach events such as taster days, campus visits and speakers from the University- more information is available at Aimhigher Northamptonshire
- A Compact Scheme to be launched in 2011 which aims to attract local students from a WP background
- Innovative partnership work with schools and colleges to tackle gender imbalances in subject areas, especially to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects
- Support for care leavers to access higher education - the University has been awarded the Frank Buttle Trust Quality kite mark for work in this area
Buddying and mentoring schemes for WP groups - Advice and guidance on a range of issues including access, mental health, disability, finance, health and accommodation through Student Services
