Certificate in Higher Education Supporting Learners

The Certificate in Higher Education: Supporting Learners (CHESL) aims to enhance and develop students' knowledge and understanding of the needs of children/learners in a range of educational contexts and settings. Specifically, it will develop students' competence in carrying out the professional role expected of teaching and learning support staff, parents/carers or volunteers in a range of educational settings.

It will also improve the students' study skills and academic writing, appropriate to undergraduate study at stage one, and their ability to examine issues from theory and established policy and practice. On completion, students will have the ability to act as reflective practitioners, analysing and critically evaluating educational policy, provision and practice.

There are a range of modules that you can pick from, and whether you want to study one module or build up to the full CHESL award, is up to you.

These modules support teaching assistants seeking to gain Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status. Students may progress to Foundation Degrees in Learning and Teaching or Early Years Sector Endorsed, then further onto linked honours degree awards to become qualified teachers through an employment-based training route or through further study on a postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE).
