Dee Rolfe
I am the Maths HLTA at 'The Ferrers.' I was first employed in the Maths faculty as a Teaching Assistant in 2001. I achieved HLTA status in 2004 by the 'assessment only route.' I found the three days of training were very helpful with regard to providing the evidence and explaining the standards.
My role has since expanded to include teaching whole classes, covering for absent teachers, taking the minutes in meetings and exam invigilation. I am the HLTA for the year 9 pastoral team and as such my duties include registration and assembly support, monitoring attendance and punctuality and other administrative tasks as they arise.
Under the supervision of teachers I prepare, deliver and assess four lessons per week. Fifty per cent of my timetable is spent covering absent maths teachers in the first instance and then in other faculties as required. I take small groups of disruptive students out of lessons.
There are advantages for all concerned. Gaining HLTA status has given me a clear and thorough understanding of the standards that are required to help students reach their full potential as well as a welcome increase in my salary. The school has also gained through a reduced cost in supply teachers. The HLTA status has provided assurance to teachers, employers and parents that the contribution I make supports teachers and helps students reach their full potential. I am able to support the students effectively when covering maths lessons as I have the subject knowledge I need.
