Help with career planning & finding work for International students
Careers Services in the UK are based on a philosophy of empowering students and graduates to take responsibility for their own educational, personal and career development. As an international student at the University of Northampton you are entitled to use the full range of our services which include:
- One to one appointments and drop in sessions for help with career planning
- Job seeking resources
- Help with applying for jobs
If you hope to work part-time during your studies or stay in the UK after completing your studies, you can use the links below to find out further details on work permits, visas etc. You will also find information to help you plan what to do after your studies.
Working whilst you are a student
The following sources can help inform you about working whilst you are studying:
- Use the online Jobshop database to look for part time work
- Read Student Services's guide to National Insurance information for students
- Eligibility to work in the UK whilst you are studying is dependent on your visa. As regulations change frequently, you should check the current situation by visiting UKCISA or the Border Agency
- The university has an International Student Adviser, Yi Lu, who can provide you with individual advice on work visas and regulations

Gaining experience whilst you are studying
- Have you considered undertaking volunteering to help you gain work experience and skills? Contact the Community Volunteers team for further details about how you can get involved - Remember, voluntary work forms part of the allocated hours which your visa permits you to work!
Applying for jobs
The following will help you to determine the correct application style for the country to which you are applying:
- Help on writing CVs and covering letters
- Help and information on completing application forms
- Call in to the Careers Information Centre and pick up information on 'Writing an Effective CV'
- Specialised information on the international labour mobility
- Help and information on writing European CVs
- Book an appointment or attend one of our drop in sessions and speak to a careers advisor about your future career, have your CV, covering letter or application form checked and practise your interview skills - please note we will help you improve your CV or application form, but we do not write CVs for students, or correct the grammar
