Student borrowing
Loan entitlements
Most students can borrow 12 books from the main collection, 15 equipment items, 5 DVDs/videos and 5 short loan items.
Postgraduates may borrow up to 20 books, 15 equipment items and 5 DVDs/videos.
There are self-service machines situated in both libraries to assist you in borrowing and returning items.
Loan periods

*Short loans are due at 10am the day after you borrow it unless you borrow it on a Friday, when it will be due at 10am on the following Monday.
How do I know which items are which loan type?

Normal loans do not have any stickers on the spine

Week loans have yellow stickers on the spine

Short loans have blue stickers on the spine
Please Note:

Shelf Ref stickers indicate that the item cannot be borrowed

STTL stickers indicate that the item is for Staff loan only

Can all items be borrowed using Self Service?

All loanable items except equipment and VHS tapes

Equipment at Park Campus is issued from the equipment office on the 2nd floor

Equipment at Avenue Campus is issued from the Help Desk
Reservations
Items on loan to other users can be reserved using the place request feature on the Library catalogue.
Renewals
There are two ways to renew items:
- Yourself - using the My Account link on the Library catalogue
- By taking the book and/or your library card to the Self service machines
Books and DVDs may be renewed up to 15 times, unless they are reserved by another customer.
All equipment (apart from laptops) may also be renewed up to five times.
Fines
- Normal, week and school experience loans: 25p per day, per item
- Short loans: £1 per hour, per item
- Equipment and laptops: £1 an hour, per item
You can avoid fines by using the Library catalogue to renew your items. Please note that this option is only available for items that are not reserved or booked by another customer.
Missing items
If you have lost an item or believe you have brought it back but it is still showing on your account, please let us know at libraryhelp@northampton.ac.uk, including the following details:
- Your name
- Your student number
- The name of the item
Proxy loan
If you unable to access the Library you can arrange for someone else to collect materials on your behalf. You will need to email libraryhelp@northampton.ac.uk stating the following:
- Your name
- Your student number
- Your home address (not your University address)
- The name of the person who is authorised to borrow on your behalf
- Dates from when the person will be authorised e.g. 17 March to 27 April
The email address you use must be the one that is registered with the University as your main contact.
Please allow 24 hours for the process to be confirmed and added to our records.
When the authorised person comes to collect the items for you, they must carry their own identification AND your University ID card.
Borrowing from other libraries
Research and final year students may use the Interlibrary Loan service.
SCONUL Access allows students to access (and potentially borrow from) other University libraries.
