The student perspective

What our students say about us:

I can understand why this University has been given the top score for value added. My grades for entering the University were quite poor (C's), but every year my grades have got better. This is down to the law staff and how much support they are willing to give to students.

Stephanie Worrell (Graduated with a 1st 2011, BA Criminology & Law)

Completing my Law degree at The University of Northampton in two years was an excellent way to reduce the number of years required to study while gaining the same qualification, knowledge and skills, and also proved as a perfect financial solution.

As part of my course I had a number of opportunities to gain practical skills, and I particularly enjoyed volunteering and providing legal advice in the local Citizens Advice Bureau.

I aim to qualify as a solicitor and I am currently undertaking a Legal Practice Course at the Leicester De Montfort University.

Egle Kampaite (2010, LLB Hons - intensive)

Studying for the LLB at The University of Northampton was a challenge - but it was a challenge which the tutors made sure I was well prepared to meet.  I had to do a lot of hard work, but along the way I studied with some of the best and most helpful lecturers I could ever wish to meet, made some lifelong friends, and had a lot of laughs - and a few tears at graduation.

In fact it was so much fun I couldn't bear to leave and am now studying for my LLM at Northampton. I am grateful to the Law Division for helping me to develop both academically and as a person, and would have no hesitation in recommending law study at Northampton - it has been a life-changing experience.

Perry Courtney (2010, LLB Hons)

I am currently studying my LPC at Nottingham Law School and undergoing work experience with the CPS. The Law Department at Northampton provided me with a sound knowledge base for my future career. The support network available far exceeds that which my peers have experienced. The relatively small year groups means that the lecturers really get to know the students which in turn means that strengths and weaknesses can be pin pointed early in the course.

The feedback from assessments and assignments helped me develop my own understanding and achieve my goals. The department not only provides a great academic opportunity for a prospective student but also allows students to get involved in law related extracurricular activities.

In my third year a colleague and I entered the National Negotiation Competition and reached the national finals. Employers are looking for well rounded students who have not only academic but also other achievements Northampton is a great place to achieve your goals.

Camilla Graham (2010, LLB Hons)

I am currently studying the BPTC (Bar Practice Training Course) at Leeds BPP. I thoroughly enjoyed studying law at Northampton. I had never studied law before my degree and I found the course both interesting and challenging.

The lecturers are amazing, they are always willing to help and are very approachable making studying law that bit easier. The course is very well structured offering a good range of options every year.

The opportunities the University of Northampton provided, such as entering the national negotiation competition and connections with Shoosmiths solicitors, have really helped in gaining practical legal experience and connections in the profession.

After studying at Northampton I feel confident and ready to enter the legal profession.

Vicky Hajba (2010, LLB Hons)

When I applied for a place to study at The University of Northampton, I was a single parent with a two year old child, working part-time on a supermarket checkout. I wanted a future, and after considering my options, I decided to study for a Joint Honours degree in Law with Business. I had a passion for consumer law, and wanted my career to go in the direction of consumer protection.

I found that I thrived at The University of Northampton, and felt a huge sense of belonging from the outset. It was three years of hard, but interesting work, and alongside my childcare commitments and voluntary work as a school governor, I graduated with a First Class BA with Honours.

Two months after graduating, I started working for BBC Radio Northampton as part of the production team for the lunchtime consumer show. It was a position I thought I could only dream about, but studying at The University of Northampton set me on the path to achieving my dream. I miss my lecturers and my time at the University terribly, but the future now looks far more exciting! Leaving a safe, part-time job to embark on three years of study was a huge risk, but it was the best decision I ever made.

Sarah Jane Bushill (2010, BA (Hons) Law with Business)

I studied Law at The University of Northampton and graduated in 2009. Overall I very much enjoyed my experience at Northampton. The key aspect of studying at Northampton is that you are valued as an individual student; all of the tutors make the effort to get to know you personally and this means you are encouraged to develop the areas you excel in, and are simultaneously able to work on anything you are struggling with. I cannot stress how important this is when working hard to get the grades and attempting to maximise your CV.

In addition The University of Northampton provided me with opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities such as volunteering and various law competitions. I volunteered for the Citizen's Advice Bureau throughout my degree and competed on a National level in the Client Interviewing Competition. It was only because of the inspiration given to me by my tutors and the opportunities on offer from the University, that I was able to do this. The effect of participating in these activities is that my CV is enhanced to give me the best possible standing for my future career.

Based on my experience, I am a firm believer that attending Northampton had a positive impact on my academic progress, my future career and on a more personal level, improved my confidence. The University of Northampton gave me the best possible start in life, and I have now completed the Bar Vocational Course and am a published barrister at Lincoln's Inn.

Sophie Kyprianou (2009, LLB Hons)

The Law degree at the University isn't a typical over-subscribed course; It's a close knit community. Not only do all of the tutors know your name but they make it incredibly easy to approach them and discuss any issues you might have. The range of modules is so vast that there is something to suit all legal tastes. I had a fantastic time throughout my three years at Northampton and thanks to all of the ongoing support and help from the legal faculty I am now a published barrister of Lincoln's Inn.

Kimberley Taylor (2009, LLB Hons)

As a mature student, I was particularly attracted to the two-year intensive Law degree. After visiting various universities, I choose to study at The University of Northampton (Park Campus). I was totally convinced it was the right choice for me because of its excellent facilities together with its notable reputation for strong teaching and support. During my study, I was faced with a challenging medical issue. I was very concerned about my progression because of the volume of work that needed to be done within a limited period of time, due to the intensive nature of the two-year course. However, I was amazed and overwhelmed by the amount of support I received, particularly from my lecturers and the University staff. I am very pleased that I made the choice of studying Law at The University of Northampton and in 2010, I graduated with a Qualifying Law Degree (QLD). I am currently studying the Legal Practice Course (LPC) full-time at Leicester Institute of Legal Practice, as my ambition is to become a solicitor.

Collins Oise (2009, LLB Hons - intensive)

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the staff of the Law faculty for the interest, help and tutelage I received during the course that met all my expectations and more, I am truly grateful.  I am currently in the process of applying for a Masters program and would like to thank everyone for the most enjoyable and productive experience I had studying law

Pierre Mensah (2011, LLB Hons - Intensive)
