Nursing
The University of Northampton offers several different fields for students interested in studying Nursing, with specialist degrees in Adult, Child, Mental Health and Learning Disability Nursing.
The University also offers Midwifery courses, including an 18 month shortened programme for qualified adult trained nurses.
Nursing courses at the University are supported by work placements with local NHS partners, allowing students to gain the practical experience they need to become a competent, qualified health professional.
Undergraduate courses
The Nursing and Midwifery Council has undertaken a review of the pre-registration nursing education and consequently a degree will be the minimum academic requirement for registration as a nurse in England. This move brings England in line with Wales and Scotland where degree level study has already been established.
The new Graduate Nursing programme will commence in September 2012. The course length will be three years and has a 45 week academic year that includes: 2,300 hours of practice and 2,300 hours of theory.
Students from all fields of Nursing are expected to have some understanding and must be able to recognise and respond to needs of all people who come into their care. This will include the following:
-
Care of babies, children and young people
-
People with physical and mental health problems
-
People with physical disabilities
-
People with learning disabilities
-
Older people
-
People with long-term cognitive problems such as cognitive impairment
Practice learning will be based on 24-hour and 7 day care.
For further information on the Standards of Pre-registration Nursing Education see http://www.nmc.org/.
Students who successfully complete their programme will have five years in which to register or record their qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
- Adult Nursing (BSc Hons)
- Child Nursing (BSc Hons)
- Mental Health Nursing (BSc Hons)
- Learning Disability Nursing (BSc Hons)
European Nursing Module (ENM)
The University of Northampton is one of only four Universities in the country that can offer a two week placement in one of around 18 different European cities.
Students experience a different health system, culture and life experience.
This opportunity is available at a specifically negotiated time during the programme within the second or third stage of study.
Students do have to meet the costs themselves though these are kept to the minimum possible.
The two weeks away do count as placement hours as agreed with the NMC.
