What is a two-year fast-track degree?

A two-year fast track degree is a new and exciting degree format giving you opportunity to study a full Honours degree in two years.

So how does it work? You take one extra module each academic year and continue studying with extra modules over part of the summer break. You will still get one month off in the summer and the usual breaks at Christmas and Easter.

Why should you study a fast-track degree?

  • Accelerate your career: Gain a real advantage by entering the job market a year earlier. You'll save money and get on the career ladder sooner
  • Reduce your debt: One year's less study means you are saving one year's tuition fees and cutting your living costs whilst at university by up to a third
  • Stand out from the crowd: When it comes to getting a job, anyone who is prepared to work intensively to complete a full Honours degree in two years is going to stand out from other applicants. It proves you are not afraid of hard work and are highly motivated
  • Change your career: A fast-track degree is ideal if you are looking to return to study but can't afford to take three years out of work
  • Take a gap year and still graduate with your friends: A fast-track degree gives you an extra year to play with before you enter the world of work

Just do the sums

As well as being able to enter the job market and start earning a year earlier, you will make a significant saving on your tuition fees and living costs.

Most universities charge £3,145* in tuitions fees a year on their undergraduate programmes, so by cutting out one year of study you would save £3,145 alone. In addition, if your family income is low you may be entitled to a loan to pay all or part of your fees that doesn't need to be paid back until you are earning over £15,000 a year.

As a full-time student, you might also be eligible for a bursary and other financial support in the same way as a three-year student. Student loans take into consideration the summer term and you should receive a larger sum to reflect the extra time spent studying.

You may be entitled to a maintenance grant each year and receive a bursary from The University of Northampton.

If you are moving away from home to attend university, you could cut your accommodation and living costs by around £7,033 (www.nusonline.co.uk) by studying for only two years.

These attributes will prove invaluable when it comes to finding a job, as you will be able to demonstrate to employers that you possess the focus and motivation that they look for in graduates.

What happens if I decide a two-year degree is not for me?

It is easy to swap at any point, as you will be studying the same modules as three-year students.
