Economics (Joint Honours)

Three years full-time or flexible part-time. Students can complete a placement in the third year, making the course four years long.

Economics is an interesting subject area that develops analytical skills which are of value in many fields of employment. The course will provide students with the opportunity to study a range of economic topics and to develop skills and knowledge to enable them to understand economic issues.

Progression through the stages gives students the opportunity to study key areas of interest using knowledge and methods they have acquired. Modules reflect contemporary issues and problems in economics both in the UK and overseas.

Stage one

Students will study the interactions between firms and individuals and economics of the real world which adopts an applied approach to explain historical and current events from an economic perspective. A third optional module, the developing world, uses case studies to examine the experience of developing countries.

Stage two

This provides an understanding of both macro and micro economic theory in compulsory modules, developing this in options such as the business of sport and labour market economics.

Stage three

The final stage of the course uses both theoretical and applied learning materials to analyse some of the most important areas of economics today including international issues.

A range of assessment instruments are used on the modules contained within the course. Students will encounter examinations, individual and group written work and presentations, and extended project work.

Economists are employed in a variety of fields including national and local Government, banking, insurance, industry and education. The analytical skills and training provided in the economics units will also enable graduates to enter a business career either as generalist graduate trainees or in more specialised functional areas such as accounting or marketing.
