The course offers the study of the challenging concepts of social inclusion and difference and diversity.
The course aims to attract those students who wish to further pursue careers within the Special Educational Needs field across a range of professional contexts in education, social care, health and the creative therapies.

Entry requirements
In addition to general entry requirements, applicants are expected to demonstrate a standard of written English equivalent to a GCSE grade C. A typical offer is between 260-300 UCAS tariff points. We welcome international applications and applications from students with a range of non-traditional educational or professional qualifications.

Course content
The course is designed to give a broad and in-depth critical understanding of the theoretical perspectives of SEN and Inclusion and relate these to current practices in a range of contexts. The course considers new agendas in education involving multidisciplinary approaches to children's, young people's and adult services.
Special course features
The modules offer a diverse range of dynamic teaching approaches that reflect the diversity of learners and learning situations in inclusive contexts.
The course is also available as part of the Joint Honours programme.

Assessment
Assessment is by coursework involving essays, presentations, portfolios, project work and dissertation.
Career opportunities
Career opportunities in this field are increasing across disciplines and contexts; there is a varied range of opportunities from specialist work with specific groups of children, young people and adults to support, advocatory, advisory, organisational and administrative roles in both statutory and non-statutory services. The course will develop core knowledge, skills and experiences for students to apply in facilitating learning and to plan and initiate programmes of support in a range of educational contexts and beyond. There is an integrated 'professional strand' for those students who wish go on to apply for PGCE/GTP teacher training qualification and also a linked route to postgraduate studies in the MA Education programme.
Work placement opportunities
At stage two and three students may opt to undertake in-depth study of a specific SEN related areas (for example Autism, Dyslexia, EBD, PMLD etc).
At stage two the Professional Strand will involve a work shadow placement.
At stage three the Professional Strand module involves the investigation and reporting of a curriculum initiative from the perspective of a reflective practitioner. There will also be opportunities for short-term placements and research in international contexts throughout the programme.

Fees quoted are for home and EU students commencing their course in the academic year 2012/13. Tuition fees are payable for each year of the course. The fees are subject to annual increases in subsequent academic years.
