Special Educational Needs and Inclusion

Three years full-time. Part-time between four to six years

The course is designed to give a broad and in-depth critical understanding of the theoretical perspectives of SEN and Inclusion and relate these to current practices in a range of contexts. The course considers new agendas in education involving multidisciplinary approaches to children's, young people's and adult services.

The modules offer a diverse range of dynamic teaching approaches that reflect the diversity of learners and learning situations in inclusive contexts.

The course is also available as part of the Joint Honours programme.

Assessment is by coursework involving essays, presentations, portfolios, project work and dissertation.

Career opportunities in this field are increasing across disciplines and contexts; there is a varied range of opportunities from specialist work with specific groups of children, young people and adults to support, advocatory, advisory, organisational and administrative roles in both statutory and non-statutory services. The course will develop core knowledge, skills and experiences for students to apply in facilitating learning and to plan and initiate programmes of support in a range of educational contexts and beyond. There is an integrated 'professional strand' for those students who wish go on to apply for PGCE/GTP teacher training qualification and also a linked route to postgraduate studies in the MA Education programme.

At stage two and three students may opt to undertake in-depth study of a specific SEN related areas (for example Autism, Dyslexia, EBD, PMLD etc).

At stage two the Professional Strand will involve a work shadow placement.

At stage three the Professional Strand module involves the investigation and reporting of a curriculum initiative from the perspective of a reflective practitioner. There will also be opportunities for short-term placements and research in international contexts throughout the programme.
