The course covers all of the key elements associated with Service Management including Processes, Design, Transition, and Operations. The second year allows students to research a project related to IT Service Management in the workplace. The student will be provided with an underpinning of ITIL®, Prince2® and current whitepapers and publications relating to the ITSM field . In devising this award the programme team have decided to continue with their commitment to recognising professional qualifications and will give exemption for the project management module to students with the Prince2® Practioner award

Entry requirements
The University of Northampton admissions policy applies. Final decisions on course admissions will rest with the individual course leader. The course leaders will assess the student's capacity both to cope with the demands of the course and to benefit from it.
Students are admitted to study a particular course leading to a named award. Non-standard admissions are welcomed from those with relevant work experience and a minimum of two years experience in the IT field. Those students working in a project management environment who hold a current Prince2 Practitioner qualification will be exempt from the INS3029 Project Management module.

Course content
The course in year one gives the student an insight into the key areas of IT Service Management and provides the broad knowledge that those working in the industry need. Students who work in the industry will be able to relate these key elements to their working environment and the assignments and projects are designed to consolidate this learning in a practical way. Generic elements of project management and technology development underpin the student's second year. These elements enable the student to embark on a worthwhile IT Service Management project within their work environment.
Special course features
The University Diploma in ITSM is unique as it is not taught in other universities and yet it is the career path which many people take without formal qualifications. The team delivering this programme have provided PG Cert and MSc IT Service Management as a specialist provision within NBS for over five years. Members of the Information Services team are actively involved with the it Service Management Forum (itSMF), the Education Special Interest group and the Executive Committee for Qualifications and Certification connected to that forum and the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA) council. They also embark on staff development that aligns with industry. Their expertise adds value to the student experience and ensures currency and good practice throughout.

Assessment
Tutor-led seminars, workshops, practicals, reflective portfolios, research and group activities enable students to relate to other members of the module and to reflect on and develop the principles and concepts of IT Service Management as the course progresses. Specific tele-conference, video-conference and multimedia techniques will be used to enhance the learning experience. Other assignments encourage students to develop independent and group research skills which are translated into a written format and presentation that is subject to peer group and formal evaluation.
Career opportunities
Students enrolling in this module will be working in the Service Management environment. This course provides them with the knowledge that will enable them to progress into careers requiring an understanding ITIL® and Prince2®. Careers in these areas are extensive. Aligning this degree with SFIA and giving exemptions for professional qualifications will ensure employability in a range of jobs connected to this discipline. Working with IT Service Management at a number of levels will give graduates the opportunity to operate within key process areas involving project management and change associated with transition. Also service desk support and security, risk and continuity posts relating to service design.
