Course content
The BSc (Hons) International Nursing programme addresses the dynamics of health and healthcare with an exploration of the extent to which problems facing health care systems develop from common roots or are in response to specific circumstances. As healthcare cannot be separated from issues that directly impinge on health, these factors are analysed, including economic inequalities, the environment, welfare systems and lifestyle factors. The programme explores how health belief systems interact with the healthcare response and in particular how cultural backgrounds and other influences can play an important role in the construction of our health beliefs and practices. Students are introduced to a variety of healthcare systems and models with international comparison between healthcare systems and policy decisions.
The programme also explores specifically the challenges facing contemporary nursing practice and identity within an international context through an exploration of common or shared professional issues and values. The development of academic skills commensurate with graduate status is a key component of the programme.
This programme does not lead to registration as a nurse in the UK but for those who have the entry criteria, the Overseas Nurses Programme can be accessed during or following the BSc International Nursing degree. For further information about the ONP contact Dr Tricia James.
