Course content
Students will acquire valuable laboratory and computational skills necessary for success in a broad range of biological and health related fields, as well as non-scientific careers. The course is also ideal for students who wish to become professional research scientists
A range of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, practical laboratory sessions and workshops.
Stage one
Students study a range of both compulsory and optional modules. The compulsory modules provide a foundation in molecular, cellular, immunological and physiological aspects of human biology, as well as introducing students to essential practical research skills including microscopy, analytical methods, DNA amplification and elementary data handling. Optional modules focus on areas such as human evolutionary biology and a study of how the human body is able to maintain a healthy physiological and metabolic balance.
Stage two
Students study both compulsory and designated modules. The compulsory modules build on the topics covered in stage one. For example, the introductory molecular genetics learnt in stage one is expanded in stage two to include a study of genomics. Students also learn the molecular basis of metabolism and how our bodies interact with a range of external influences like light, sound and stressful situations. Furthermore, students undertake a variety of laboratory investigations and quantitative data analysis. Optional modules allow students to develop academically in more specialist areas such as the impact of diet on health and mechanisms of human disease.
Stage three
Single and major honours students are assigned an academic supervisor and pursue an individual laboratory-based research project on a specialist topic. Additionally, students study optional modules which enhance the knowledge and understanding gained in previous stages. Several advanced options are available including neuroscience, evolution, heredity, immunology, health, the environment and nutrition. Students studying Human Bioscience as a subject, and as part of a Joint Honours degree, will take at least three of these options and undertake an original study in a topic of their choice related to an aspect of human biology.
