Course content
The course encourages the development of the inventive, questioning and creative intelligence which demonstrates a balance between innovative thinking and practical ability.
A strong sense of where an individual's work is placed in the context of the professional visual arts is encouraged by theoretical research and practical experience, and is reflected in the profile of the teaching staff, who operate across a broad range of art practices.
Fundamental to the student experience is the development of appropriate practical skills, and work-based professional skills, supported by a theoretical and contextual framework which encourages traditional and interdisciplinary multimedia approaches. Painting, printmaking, photography/digital media and sculpture provide the main focus for media experience and experiment, in studio teaching, theoretical study and critical analysis inform the development of ideas, which may be realised in a broader range of forms, such as installation, video or performance.
Stage one
Introductions to painting, printmaking, photography and sculpture, alongside the development of personal creative practice in the studio are supported by theory lectures. This stage is primarily about generating and exploring ideas through a range of media and processes, and investigating the broad range of opportunities in the arts.
Stage two
There is a choice of one or more specialist areas through which to explore ideas, develop skills and produce a body of practical work. This aspect is complemented by theory lectures and a personally developed folder of information about career direction in the arts. Stage two encourages the development of a personal visual language and the acquisition of skills, and the identification of personal ambition in the arts.
