Course content
This subject is only available as a minor subject in the Joint Honours programme, so students must choose their other subject as a major subject.
The course offers the opportunity to understand and reflect upon the context within which students are working and to link this experience as appropriate to their main subject area.
Applied Management requires the student to be in work on a part-time paid basis or have involvement in a regular voluntary activity. The workplace is used as a vehicle for learning and assessment with support from the employer. The work experience is supported by the Centre for Work-based Learning who organise workshops and supervision from a University tutor. The modules offer considerable scope for students to negotiate their own learning objectives.
Students that are moving to Northampton for the course will be given four weeks to find suitable part-time work. The University also offers a job-shop facility to match employer vacancies with students.
Regardless of the student's specialist subject area or intended career path, this degree will enhance personal and professional skills, develop confidence and enhance graduate employability prospects.
The majority of students are involved in work of some nature during their period of study. The nature of the work is not defined but considered on an individual basis. Students may be working in an area that reflects their major subject or alternatively students may treat this subject as an applied business education in its own right.
Stage one
At stage one the student is involved in the development of their subject and professional knowledge and skills via studying their host organisation and business sector.
Stage two
Students are involved in more complex studies involving the development of aspects of student's job roles and undertake more independent project work.
Stage three
The final stage pulls together the skills and knowledge developed at stages one and two and involves a project related to the workplace experience.
