Course content
Students will experience a range of media including video and audio production and, if they choose, photography and web design. The aim is to produce multi-faceted media personnel who are conversant with contemporary production skills and processes, encouraging students to think creatively and critically. The emphasis is on the conceptual as well as the technical.
The course enables students to gain experience in a wide range of media and then, using the skills gained, develop areas of specialisation at stage three. The practical emphasis of the degree is contextualised within a contemporary theoretical approach to media forms, audiences and industries. The degree content is designed to enable students to play a full role in the modern digital media world. Gaining experience in video, sound and audio production, students are able to build up portfolios of work throughout the course.
Stage one
Stage one provides students with a range of experiences across video, sound and, if chosen, photography and web design. This development of a broad knowledge base is complemented by researching, planning and media management skills. Stage one also introduces some of the key theories and debates pertaining to contemporary media production.
Stage two
Stage two has an emphasis on non-fiction and prepares students for stage three in equipping them with more advanced media production skills in film production and sound. A more critical approach to their work and that of others, including professionals, is encouraged. Alongside this, students, if they choose, can develop their skills in photography and music production.
Stage three
In this final stage students (providing they are majoring in the subject) work independently on their own project, take part in a group 'live' brief and complete a dissertation. Thus their practical and theoretical skills are brought together to produce a substantial portfolio of professional standard work.

FAQ
Would studying a joint degree in Media Production guarantee me a job in the media?
No, a joint degree in media will certainly help but you need to be self-motivated and build up a portfolio of work and contacts whilst studying as well.
Is the degree wholly practical?
No, the conceptual aspect for us is as important as the technical. Ideas are what count. You will learn how to use cameras and editing software but you will also be encouraged to think creatively.
