Advanced Occupational Therapy

The award aims to provide a flexible course of study which allows students to complete a post registration MSc profession specific award, at their own pace and in relation to their current circumstances. It provides relevant opportunities for personal academic development at postgraduate post registration level (M level) leading to the award of MSc in Advanced Occupational Therapy and further develop critical thinking skills and reflective practice.

Attendance
This full or part-time award consists of seven modules. Within the part-time route each module requires attendance for approx six days at the University. The full-time route would require a minimum of ten hours per week attendance. The award can be completed in a period of between two to four years part-time.

Students must be registered occupational therapists with an undergraduate degree or equivalent.
An APL/APEL module exists for therapists wishing to transfer credits from other universities.

Course content
The course aims to broaden horizons in terms of context and delivery of health and social care and students will reflect on the current practice environment to consider effectiveness of intervention and the wider issues that impact on service delivery.
Whenever appropriate students will share the learning experience with practitioners from other professions thus providing the opportunity to deepen understanding of the roles and skills other professions offer and explore effective methods of collaborative working.
In addition to these general aims, each module within the award has its own set of aims.
The award has been identified to enable occupational therapy postgraduate candidates to undertake a focussed Masters programme leading towards an award in their professional specialist area.
To become eligible for the award the student must undertake:

- Research methods in health and social care
- Dissertation
- Occupation for occupational therapist
- Current issues for occupational therapists
- Advanced skills for therapists
Two designated/optional modules from a wide professional choice including:
- Enabling person centred rehabilitation
- Forensic mental health care
- Innovation and creativity
- Leadership: the people challenge
- Managing advanced professional practice
- Pain
Special course features
- Develop student's knowledge and skills in order that they can undertake research at Masters degree level
- Extend and apply both knowledge and practical skills to student's current circumstances
- Identify learning needs and develop independent learning skills to meet these needs

The modules use a variety of assessment methods including essays, presentations and case presentations.

Fees quoted are for home and EU students commencing their course in the academic year 2012/13. Tuition fees are payable for each year of the course. The fees are subject to annual increases in subsequent academic years.
