Typically 140-160 UCAS points equivalent to one A level at a grade D, a pass in a recognised Access course, BTEC National Diploma or Certificate. We welcome international applications and applications from students with a range of non-traditional educational or professional qualifications.

Course content

Teaching staff have much industry experience and can guide students, depending on whether they wish to pursue a career as a session musician, or further their studies with a degree programme, students can top up their HND to a BA (Hons) with a third year of study on the music degree programme at The University of Northampton.

The course also provides a wide theoretical grounding across music and musicianship. Students study five modules each stage for the two-year course and will be expected to attend all classes. They can make use of evening practice booth bookings and computer music bookings. Students will be expected to complete research outside timetabled class times, writing reports or essays to accompany practical work.

Stage one

Students are introduced to a range of new skills, knowledge and techniques, developing their underlying basic musicianship whilst introducing them to a range of industry standard equipment and practices.

Stage two

At this stage students are expected to start applying the skills learnt at stage one, functioning more autonomously as learners and demonstrating the essential entrepreneurial skills needed for success in this industry. Students will also have the opportunity to undertake additional studies which will enable them to progress on to a top-up year converting their HND into a BA (Hons).

Assessment

Students are assessed by a variety of methods including coursework-only and coursework and end-of-year examinations depending on the module.

Career opportunities

Graduates have a wide range of careers to choose from, including practicing musician/composer/ arranger, (peripatetic) music teacher, arts administrator and if students top up their HND to a BA (Hons) they will be eligible to progress on to further postgraduate studies.
