Civil Engineering

Two years full-time, three years part-time.

The focus will be principally on technical aspects of the subject and on management issues associated with civil engineering projects. Emphasis is placed on links to the workplace and the application of theoretical knowledge to workplace examples.

Some elements of this course are common to the Construction Management FdSc. Students will study design principles and application, applied scientific principles and management principles. In addition site surveying, civil engineering construction and geology and soil mechanics are also studied. Students will complete an individual project in the final stage on a civil engineering related topic.

Stage one

At stage one students study core modules relating to construction law, applied science principles and design principles. A period of industrial placement is included and students analyse the health and safety issues affecting the construction industries. Theoretical knowledge relating to geology and soil mechanics and site surveying processes also covered.

Stage two

At stage two students study a number of important management principles and discuss structural analysis and aspects of civil engineering construction. Project performance is studied in the context of the industrial placement. Theoretical aspects of construction materials and construction economics are also covered.

This course uses a wide range of assessment methods including written work, presentations, practical project work and time constrained assessment. The assessment is on-going throughout the course.

A number of career opportunities exist including work as planners, site managers, advisors or administrative and technical roles within construction and civil engineering companies. Students may also wish to proceed to degree level study.
