Entry requirements

Applicants should normally have a minimum of 40 UCAS tariff points. We welcome international applications and applications from students with a range of non-traditional educational or professional qualifications. Applicants are expected to demonstrate an interest in the construction industry.

Course content

Students will consider building design and construction, services and environmental issues associated with a variety of construction projects.

The course is designed to allow students to explore a number of issues of significance to the construction sector. Strong links are made to the industry and students are encouraged to link their theoretical knowledge to work-place situations. Students will study topics such as design principles, analytical methods, technology and services and site surveying techniques. In addition production management principles will be discussed. An individual project forms a key part of the course. Students will be required to select a topic of relevance to the construction sector to complete this.

Stage one

At stage one students study core modules relating to construction law, applied science principles and design principles. A period of industrial placement is included and students analyse the health and safety issues affecting the construction industry. Theoretical knowledge relating to construction technology and site surveying processes is also covered.

Stage two

At stage two students study a number of important management principles and discuss quality control in construction management. Project performance is studied in the context of the industrial placement. Theoretical aspects of construction materials and technology and services are also covered.

Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are employed including written reports, presentations, practical reports, group projects, seminars and examinations.

Career opportunities

A number of career opportunities exist including work as planners, site managers, advisors or administrative and technical roles within construction companies. Students may also wish to proceed to degree level study by following the BSc (Hons) Construction Management top-up degree programme.
