MSc

Health Studies is the interdisciplinary study of the multiple determinants of health and ill-health. It explores the social, psychological and biological factors that contribute to wellbeing. It is also the study of health care systems, health policy and ethics in health care and health research.

Attendance

Attendance on this course can be on a full-time or a part-time basis to allow students to combine work and study. For each module, students will need to attend six teaching days time-tabled across one semester. Full-time students will normally study three modules (60 credits) per trimester and part-time students will study one module (20 credits) per trimester.

Applicants would normally be expected to have a good honours degree in a relevant subject area, but those without may be considered through the special admissions procedure.

Course content

The MSc in Health Studies is a multi-professional award which has been developed to meet the growing demands of people who wish to combine continuing professional development in the area of health with the achievement of a recognised academic qualification.

The course aims to provide access to a wide range of contemporary modules that will be relevant to the learning needs of healthcare professionals and others working in related fields. The award has been designed to provide students with the opportunity to share professional knowledge and insight in a multi-professional forum, reflecting on the place of their professional expertise and practice in relation to other disciplines contributing to healthcare.

There is a range of assessment which enables a demonstration of knowledge, synthesis and analysis in a variety of forms.

Career opportunities

The attainment of an MSc in Health Studies with a specific professional focus will enhance progression within the relevant healthcare setting. The non-profession specific award will be welcomed throughout the health and social care arena.

Fees quoted are for home and EU students commencing their course in the academic year 2012/13. Tuition fees are payable for each year of the course. The fees are subject to annual increases in subsequent academic years.

Part-time fees

Year 1: £540 per 20 credit module

Funding for some of these modules may be available from NHS East Midlands subject to meeting the required criteria through the Learning Beyond Registration contract which is accessible until March 2013. Please follow the link for eligibility criteria.
