Nursing (Mental Health)

The programme offers a flexible, blended approach to learning, which draws on a full range of modern teaching and learning methods. Students learn in a range of settings, with links to their service user's journey.
Students learn how to practice within a statutory framework and code of ethics which will enable them to develop as safe, caring and competent decision-makers willing to accept personal and professional accountability for their actions and continuing professional development.
Upon successful completion of the programme the student will gain the qualification of Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
Registration with the NMC is required to practice as a nurse in the UK. Students who successfully complete their programme will have five years in which to register or record their qualifications with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

One of the following routes:
- 240-300 UCAS tariff points at A level along with five GCSEs grade A - C
- A BTEC National Diploma at M, M, M and five GCSEs grade A - C
- National Certificate Advanced GNVQ/GSVQ Merit grade overall and five GCSEs grade A - C
- A kitemarked Access to Higher Education course with 30 credits at Merit or above
- Successful completion of the first year of a relevant Foundation Degree, along with five GCSEs grade A - C
- A Health and Social Care Diploma at Level 3 (advanced level) along with five GCSEs grade A - C
English and Maths GCSE at grade C or above are essential and must be achieved prior to commencement of the course. Recent academic study completed within the last five years is also required. Where the applicant's first language is not English, evidence of an IELTS score of 7 is required.

Course content
The curriculum's modular basis enables the student to develop both personally and professionally. Nurses who already hold a professional registration can study for a second registration. Students who undertake this route and successfully complete this course will obtain an additional qualification in Mental Health Nursing.
Mental Health Nursing
Students study generic and mental health field specific modules, focus on the care of individuals with mental health problems and are integrated with appropriate placement learning opportunities within hospitals and the community.
Special course features
- Practical experience in health care settings
- Practical experiences are gained within hospitals, community settings, the voluntary sector and other health and social care organisations within Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire
- European Nursing Module through which students can complete a two week placement in a European city

Study abroad opportunities
European Nursing Module (ENM)
The University of Northampton is one of only four Universities in the country that can offer a two week placement in one of around 18 different European cities.
Students experience a different health system, culture and life experience.
This opportunity is available at a specifically negotiated time during the programme within the second or third stage of study.
Students do have to meet the costs themselves though these are kept to the minimum possible.
The two weeks away do count as placement hours as agreed with the NMC.
