Course content
The course enables students to gain experience in a wide range of media and then, using the skills gained, develop areas of specialisation at stage three. The practical emphasis of the degree is contextualised within a contemporary theoretical approach to media forms, audiences and industries. The degree content is designed to enable students to play a full role in the modern digital media world. Gaining experience in video production, sound production and photography, students are able to build up portfolios of work throughout the course.
Stage one
Stage one provides students with a range of experiences across video, sound and photographic media, alongside an understanding of internet technology. This development of a broad knowledge base is complemented by researching, planning and media management skills. Stage one also introduces some of the key theories and debates pertaining to contemporary media production.
Stage two
Students work on more advanced media production skills and, together with scriptwriting, are prepared for the third stage. A more critical approach to their work and that of others, including professionals, is encouraged. Alongside this, students take a more focused look at media theory and research developing skills and ideas that will feed into stage three.
Stage three
In this final stage, students work independently on their own project, as well as within a major group project, and complete a dissertation. Thus their practical and theoretical skills are brought together to produce a substantial portfolio of professional standard work.

FAQ
Would getting a degree in Media Production guarantee me a job in the media?
No, a media degree will certainly help but you need to be self-motivated and build up a portfolio of work and contacts whilst studying.
Is the degree wholly practical?
No, the conceptual aspect for us is as important as the technical. Ideas are what count. You will learn how to use cameras and editing software but you will also be encouraged to think creatively.
