Marketing
BA (Hons)
It is hard to think of an organisation that doesn't need marketing and this continues to be a fast growing sector of business offering employment opportunities for new graduates.
The University of Northampton, BA (Hons) in Marketing is one of only a few marketing courses in the UK that is accredited by The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) for a Dual Award. This Dual Award means that while you are studying for your qualification you also have the opportunity to work towards achieving the CIM Professional Diploma in Marketing as part of your degree programme, enabling you to graduate with an enhanced qualification that is sought after by employers.
This additional professional qualification makes you more marketable by distinguishing you from other candidates and is another important step in your career development.
In addition, with appropriate work experience you will be eligible to join The Chartered Institute of Marketing with associate or member status and signatory letters ACIM or MCIM.

Course content
The programme has been specifically designed to enable course members to follow a professional career in marketing, be it in the private, public, non-profit or service sectors. On completion, students could succeed in any marketing role in any organisation.
For each stage you will take six modules. After the second stage of the traditional degree there is an optional placement year where you will be able to gain credits for your degree. The modules offered during the placement year are 'Learning Through Work' and 'Project Performance Analysis'. This is an option worth considering. We have found that students returning from their placement year often achieve better grades in the critical final stage and often have better employment prospects when they leave.
Stage one
Stage one of the course is a foundation programme which introduces various aspects of marketing. You will study foundations of marketing theory and marketing communications and develop skills in critical analysis, business modelling and market research.
Stage two
In stage two the course examines brand management, services marketing, strategic marketing, marketing communications and themed options such as e-commerce, marketing communications, entrepreneurship and new ventures, retailing and international marketing.
Stage three
The third stage offers the opportunity to further specialise in an area of interest, and pursue a theme which best fits the area of marketing in which you plan to start your career such as global marketing, marketing management, campaign planning, e-retailing, new product development, or customer relationship management. If you would rather remain a generalist you can select modules from the whole of the award portfolio. In addition, all students undertake a dissertation or project on a marketing issue. Your choice of topic allows you to explore an area in which you have developed an interest and which best fits the area of marketing in which you plan to start your career.
Special course features
- Students can choose to follow a specialist theme of marketing in the second and third years, choosing from e-commerce, advertising and public relations, entrepreneurship, retailing, international marketing and professional consulting
- Students have the opportunity to work towards a professional qualification from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) by gaining exemption from two modules of their Professional Diploma, upon successful graduation
- Achieving this qualification may give you significant advantage in the jobs market
- Emphasis is placed on developing skills and competence as a marketer with numerous opportunities to work on 'live' company projects.
- Option to study for a two-year intensive degree over 24 months instead of the conventional three-year degree route, or spread out over four years
