Entry requirements

Standard entry requirements apply. Applicants will have achieved a HND/Foundation Degree in a related subject. The course content should be broadly similar to that of the Foundation Degree in Applied Equine Studies offered by Moulton College and The University of Northampton. Applicants would normally be expected to achieve at least four merit grades in the second stage of their HND or have an equivalent Foundation Degree profile.

Course content

This one-year full-time course is available at stage three only. It builds on the Foundation Degree in Equine Management but would also be appropriate for students wishing to top-up their HND qualification to degree stage. The course develops a more detailed understanding and practical competence in business, event and horse management.

The theoretical content of the course focuses on equine management, including topics such as nutrition, behaviour and event management. This helps to prepare and enable graduates to enter employment in a number of fields. A key feature of the course is the research project which students design and carry out under the guidance of a tutor.

Assessment

A wide variety of assessment methods are used including written work, presentations, practical project work, examinations and time-constrained assessment. Assessment is continuous throughout the course.

Career opportunities

The course has been designed to broaden career opportunities for students by preparing them for possible employment within yard management, education, research and development positions, nutrition and pharmaceutical companies, animal welfare organisations such as the International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH) or Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), or to continue with further studies.
