Engineering

BSc (Hons)

From September 2012 the Department of Engineering and Technology will offer a full-time integrated BEng (Hons) / MEng programme. The BSc Engineering will continue to be available to new students as a flexible HNC/HND/BSc or HND/BSc full-time or part-time route (please see listing for the HNC, HND and BSc Top Up for further details). Students who already hold a relevant Foundation Degree or HND may be able to join the BSc (Hons) Engineering (top-up) programme.

There is a major skills shortage in the UK for qualified engineers who can undertake a variety of jobs in areas such as management, design, development, planning, control, marketing and sales.

Course content

The course covers the broad range of topics that would be expected of a modern engineer. This includes both mechanical and electrical principles as well as engineering design and manufacturing processes. Students are also taught about quality systems, business and organisations, economics and management and a range of other skills. In stage two, a number of students are offered a 12-month paid work placement in a local company through the Northants Engineering Training Partnership (NETP). At stages two and three, those in full-time employment can participate as a full-time student provided they can attend the course one day a week.

Stage one

At stage one the fundamental principles and concepts of engineering are introduced, along with knowledge and understanding of technical requirements and management issues. The course encourages application of these concepts to a range of situations including a significant design and make project.

Stage two

Stage two extends knowledge and skills to more complex issues. Students are encouraged to work in an industrial setting, giving them the opportunity to work alongside professional experienced engineers to solve real problems. Training programmes are agreed with the companies and overseen by engineering teaching staff to ensure the best possible learning environment. Problem-solving, teamwork and analytical skills develop strongly during this part of the course. This is complemented by the use of computer aided engineering software packages.

Stage three

Stage three encourages independent thinking and evaluation of new engineering technologies such as computer simulation and modelling and the tools and techniques used in quality and manufacture. Central to stage three is the major project (normally industry-based), where students specialise in areas that they are particularly interested in.

Special course features

  • Stage two and stage three students are taught one day a week, to allow them to go on a paid work placement

  • Electronic principles
  • Engineering design
  • Manufacturing and materials
  • Mechanical principles

Assessment

Assessment is via coursework, oral presentations, group work, practical reports, critical reviews and end-of-stage exams.
