History
Northampton Technical College hit the headlines on September 17, 1932.
Let's take a look back at some of the key developments of The University of Northampton:
- A university was originally formed in Northampton in 1260 by scholars from the University of Cambridge, joined by scholars from Oxford in 1263.
- In 1265, following the Battle of Lewes, the King signed a Royal Decree dissolving the university at Northampton.
- In 1924, Northampton Technical College was formed — the St George's Avenue building opened by the Duke and Duchess of York in 1932. The School of Art opened in 1937.
- Then Secretary of State for Education and Science, Margaret Thatcher, opened the College of Education at Park Campus in 1972.
- In 1975, Nene College was formed from the amalgamation of the College of Education, College of Technology and College of Art with c.2,000 students.
Students from the past
- In 1992, focus on higher education after college transferred further education to FE Colleges in Northamptonshire.
- In 1993, the College incorporated St. Andrew's School of Occupational Therapy and was granted taught (first) degree awarding powers.
- In 1994 and 1997, took in the Leathersellers College (London) and Sir Gordon Roberts College of Nursing and Midwifery.
- Became University College Northampton in 1999.
- Awarded full 'university' title and research degree awarding powers 2005 - a recognised 'kite mark' of quality.
